What was I thinking, writing sexy stories at work? I was bored. I didn’t feel like working. I just couldn’t face another hour of mindless repetition, boring paperwork. Those are the excuses, the distractions to keep from saying what happened next.

In fact I have to write what happened next. Have to? Yes, I have to.

It’s ridiculous that I sit with my back to the entrance to my cubicle, but perhaps they planned it that way so passers-by can see what we’re up to. But when I’m goofing off at work I always keep one ear to the corridor and have something innocuous I can switch to quickly. It’s always gone to plan in the past. Never been caught.

Until, that is, the IT guys installed some kind of spy program that lets them see what websites all the employees on the company network were accessing at any time. Damn geeks were my downfall.

I didn’t find out about it until Andy, my boss, called me into his office this morning. “Nixy?” he said. It was all he said, and he said it with a raised eyebrow and a look. But it was enough. Only my close friends call me Nixy. Nobody at work. Not a soul. So I knew he knew something that I probably didn’t want him to know.

“Erm, yes?”

“Been busy today?” Andy is good looking, by the way, and I don’t have to say that part, but it’s true. He’s about 40 and his black hair is turning steely grey on the sides, but it just makes him look more handsome. He’s got a trim build, but you can tell he works out. Not muscley really, more of a runner’s build. I’ve noticed before that he looks good in his khakis, and more than once I’d wondered what he wore under them, but he’s my boss, and I’m not dumb. Getting involved with the boss would be a bad idea. Cliched, yeah. True? Damned straight.

And I’ll admit that I felt a familiar thrill at the very same time I got a sinking feeling. I always do when I know I’m in trouble. I didn’t know what kind of trouble yet, but I knew from the look on his face that it was big. He looked me up and down, a slow, undressing look; the kind of look I’d never gotten from him before. Oh, man.

“Well, on and off,” I said, not sure which way to go. Admit I wasn’t busy, and he’d give me more work. Act like I was overwhelmed with work, and he’d probably know I was full of it.

“Not too busy to write sex stories on company time? And post them to the internet?”

Boom. There it was. I froze. I was too stunned even to stammer, to make an excuse. I just stood there with my eyes wide and my knees suddenly feeling like they were made of banana pudding.

He waited. Not an impatient pause either. He sat and watched me for an eternity, saying nothing.

“I did take a break this morning,” I admitted, but still not willing to give an inch. I was busted. I knew it and he knew it, but that didn’t mean I was going to say it.

He smiled. Oh god. A sexy smile too, which threw me. Here I was about to lose a perfectly good job, one where I made decent money, got to travel sometimes, but didn’t leave me slammed and exhausted at the end of the day, and I was thinking that his smile was sexy. Man, I am dumb after all.

He glanced at his computer screen, which I couldn’t see. “From… 9:27 until 10:43?”

I cleared my throat. “Possibly. I wasn’t really keeping track of time.”
